HOW MANY YEARS DID IT TAKE FOR THE MANILA GOTH SCENE TO FLOURISH?

(Article from Goth In Asia  By: Gerard Bumanglag)

Update 06/24/02 SHADOWDANCE 2 was awesome! The next event is this coming July 6 called RIDING THE STORM, a tribute to The Doors. As promised, I have here now the interview with DJ RUNESCHADOW! Are you worthy?

Almost ten years. In the 80s, the "GOTH MOVEMENT" was incorporated within the so-called "NEW WAVE" party scene in Manila. A handful of us, whom you would consider true goths, were lost in a black sea of a thousand and one Robert Smith wannabes. But in 1994, the local Goth movement officially started with the fledgeling event called WHISPERED PRAYERS FROM AN OPEN GRAVE held in Makati, consisted primarily of myself, Doi Porras, Danny A., Mike Falcon, Hazel (bass of PROMINENCE OF CATHEDRALS) and the rest being fillers. Then another event (a private one), which is quite legendary by now, followed the next year ('95) called FROZEN IN A COBWEB OF DESPAIR and was held at Trisha's mansion in Dasmarinas Village. There were more of us by then, the very same people that became the foundation of the present goth scene. And the rest is history...

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE IN THE LOCAL GOTH SCENE?

I am one of the two, legitimate, GOTH/INDUSTRIAL DJs in the country at the moment (the other being DJ FLESHWOUNDS), the vocalist/songwriter/frontman for the Elektro-Goth outfit APPARITION (which is inactive at the moment). I am onehalf of SUBKULTURE PRODUCTIONS (with Doi Porras). I was the editor of two 90's dark music fanzines KARNAL KOLLAPSE and the MORTUARIUM and I am working on a new one called DEAD TISSUE SAMPLES, I would be a contributing writer and editor for the SUBKULTURE website. I will start a Goth-Fetish fashion design house, along with dearest friend Lady Lyra, called GENOCIDE within the year. etc. etc.

WHAT SIGNIFICANT EVENT/S IN THE FUTURE ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO?

We are planning a massive/major event that would take place soon, perhaps even before the end of the year. It would be a first in a series of international events. It will be some sort of an Asia-Pacific goth festival with Manila being the centre. We are also planning to take part in the 2003 WAVE GOTIK TREFFEN in Leipzig, Germany (if Doi would tag me along - hello Doi!)

WHICH FOREIGN COUNTRIES/GOTH SCENE WOULD YOU LIKE TO START AN ALLIANCE WITH?

All nations are welcome to collaborate with the Manila Goth scene. We seek contact from people all over the world. Goth Globalisation is what we are aiming for.

WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT THE GOTHIC FASHION ISSUE/CONTROVERSY THAT SEEMS TO BE BUGGING SOME PEOPLE IN A MAJOR WAY?

All I can say is, those people who have a big problem concerning others who dress up the part (i.e. dressed to distress), are people who don't feel good about themselves. They are quick to judge certain people just because they are visual and/or concerned about their appearance/image. It is not superficiality, it is a form of expression. Just because these judgemental creatures of misfortune DO NOT dress up "GOTHIC" does not mean they are more "profound" than the rest of us! They better stay in their safe little world (i.e. in front of their computer monitors) and attack all the goth websites they can find. And "the rest of us" wouldn't really care.

HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW ABOUT GOTHIC MUSIC AS A DJ? ARE THERE GOTH CLUBS IN MANILA?

I try to learn about our beloved music as much as possible. Knowing facts about the music I listen to is as rewarding as hearing it. I don't claim to be an expert on the music because I'm not but I know enough. There is only one Goth Club in Manila and it is called KLUB GARGOYLE. It moves from venue to venue.

WHAT ARE THE FUNCTIONS OF SUBKULTURE PRODUCTIONS? HOW MANY BANDS DOES IT CATER TO AT PRESENT?

SUBKULTURE is a multi-functional entity. We basically organise events for the local goth community but we are branching out into recording our domestic artists in the near future. The bands presently connected/identified with SUBKULTRE so far are DOMINION, FIVE WOUNDS TO ENTER, PROMINENCE OF CATHEDRALS, SKIES OF EMBER, THE LATE ISABEL, FUNERAL FROST, APPARITION, VIOLET DAYS, SLAVE DRUM. Some of the aforementioned artists have already put out recordings on their own.

WHAT HAVE YOU ACCOMPLISHED AS A WRITER SO FAR?

I have a long way to go as far as being a writer is concerned. I've written music reviews for other underground publications as well as for my own fanzines. My poetry are unpublished.

Sales soar for Mattel's 'Goth Barbie'

While sales of traditional Barbie dolls continue to slide, sales of Mattel's Monster High dolls are on the rise.

Look out Beach Fun Barbie, Abbey Bominable is right behind you — and she's moving in fast!

According to toy manufacturer Mattel, sales of Barbie dolls have hit a slump, while sales of the company's new line of Monster High dolls are on the rise.  In the second quarter, which ended June 30, Mattel announced that Barbie-related sales fell 12 percent — the fourth quarter in which sales for the 54-year-old doll have fallen. In the meantime, sales for Mattel's Monster High dolls, which are creepy-cutesy dolls named after famous monsters, have been skyrocketing since Mattel introduced the line in 2010.

With names like Draculara, Frankie Stein, and the aforementioned Abbey Bominable, Mattel's new "Goth Barbie" line represents a significant departure from the toy manufacturer's more traditional doll lines of Barbies, American Girls, and Disney Princesses. But is this a good thing for little girls? I asked a few eco-minded blogger friends what they thought of Monster High dolls and it actually stirred up quite a bit of conversation — everything from "OK" to  "No Way!" Here are a few snippets of the conversation:

Lisa Sharp (Retro Housewife Goes Green) "At least they aren't giving girls some false idea of beauty."

Nancy Baldwin (Surviving and Thriving on Pennies) "Don't like them one bit. They look like Bratz which I never allowed my kids to play with either...It was the skimpy clothes they were wearing. My kids can express themselves however they want but they will be covered and respected."

Tiffany Washko (Nature Moms) "As a sci-fi and movie buff I adore the concept...aka these are the teenage daughters of Frankenstein, Dracula, the Wolf Man, etc. I also like how they don't look cookie cutter adorable, they are original and not afraid to be themselves."

Tiffany Norton (Picnic Basket Crafts) "On the one hand, I'm mortified that they are even skinnier than Barbie, but on the other, it is so obviously unrealistic, maybe it doesn't matter."

So what do you think?  Is the rise in popularity of Mattel's Monster High dolls a good thing for kids?

Lia Benninghoff, 20 and Aro Draven, 38 are a couple who are madly in love with each other, literally. The couple makes it a point to drink each other's blood every week.

The two met through an online dating website. Their gothic lifestyle proved to be an instant attraction for both of them and they started dating. The couple decided to take their relationship a step further, as both of them wanted a more intimate relationship, and hence they decided to drink each other's blood.

The couple describes the blood drinking experience as a magical experience- much more intimate than sex. The couple is contemplating to legalise their 'intimate bond' and have chosen Halloween as their date of marriage.

The girl's parents are still unaware that their beloved daughter has converted to Vampirism and she is drinking a stranger’s blood. Unaware of their 'intimate bond' the parents are happy about the union.

The duo is not the only blood drinking species. There are a number of people around the world, who drink blood to live a happy life. Wikes Barre drinks two-liters of blood every day. She sucks the liquid from the backs of willing donors she meets at an occult and oddities store she runs near her home. She says that she feels healthier and stronger when she drinks human blood from 'willing donors.

GOTH KING PETER MURPHY DOING GOOFY INTERPRETIVE DANCE TO ‘HOLLOW HILLS’ BY BAUHAUS, 1983

http://dangerousminds.net/ ( Posted 01-01-2013)

According to his Wikipedia entry, Peter Murphy, who in 1983 had only just recently departed Bauhaus, made “some brief dabbling with acting and dance – including a slightly odd televised performance to Bauhaus’s ‘Hollow Hills.’”

Wha? Naturally I googled this “slightly odd televised performance” and of course, there it was… His interpretive dance here is slightly odd, I’d have to agree (“naff” is a word that comes readily to mind as well). You’d have to think his former bandmates would have found this sand dune ballet on-the-floor, coughing-with-tears-hysterically-funny to watch.

Speaking of Peter Murphy, I heard the craziest story last night over dinner with my friend Adam Peters, a Hollywood composer who recently scored Oliver Stone’s Savages (and who arranged and played the famous cello part on Echo and the Bunnymen’s “The Killing Moon”).

We had been discussing Howard Devoto’s post-punk artrock band, Magazine and he told me about seeing Bauhaus open for Magazine in Guildford in 1980. The “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” single was already out, but In The Flat Field had not been released yet. The third band was Crisis, with Douglas Pearce and Tony Wakeford later of Death In June and Sol Invictus, whose following included many skinheads.

Of course the Guildford skinheads had never seen anything like Bauhaus and, as skins do, started spitting at the band, Peter Murphy in particular. Adam said that Murphy tore his shirt off, grabbed a light on a stand and made like he was being crucified at the front of the stage, provoking a steady stream of gob as he stood motionless, shining the light directly into their faces, staring them down and daring them to continue. The band continued to vamp on the slow chords of “Bela Lugosi’s Dead,” he told me, for about a half hour as this went on, with Murphy absolutely drenched in spit.

Eventually it stopped and the skins left because this interaction had apparently freaked them the fuck out!

“That would be hard to top! Did Magazine actually play after THAT?” I asked him.

“They did, but they probably should have just tuned the house lights up. No one really cared about Magazine after that.”

If that isn’t the most Artaud-esque thing that’s ever occurred on a concert stage, I can’t imagine what would be…
