Racism, Elitism and The Goth Subculture | How I Deal

This video is a video of support and encouragement to any goth dealing with racism and/or elitism. Luckily, it doesn’t happen often to me, but when it does this is my way of handling it. I hope it helps in some way. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • hi my name is Sam im mix Black / native / Mexican .and i love your video about Racism in Goth Culture You sent Anyways I've been in the culture for over 20 years it's closer to 30. And what you said seems like it makes complete sense because my band started in the '90s and we were pushed aside once people figured out we were banned mostly of color. my band in The Ex-tracts

  • Thank you so much for this video. I'm currently thirty-right and have always had an interest in the dark and macabre since I was a kid. As such I've always wanted to engage the lifestyle but being raised southern Baptist caused me to hesitate. Well, fast-forward to today and I attended my first goth event at a club last month and had the time of my life. My wife and I are attending Valentine's Day-themed event this Friday. ๐Ÿ–ค

  • I'm a mexican Batcave Goth and Beetlejuice Goth and I agree to everything you say

  • Such good advice! People with your demeanor make me have faith in the world again. I love people who can be who they are true to themselves and see the injustice in the world and don't allow it but also are just very diplomatic about it!

  • im a puerto rican death metal head/old school elder goth that grew up with a black step family. i dont tolerate racists. i am a real big guy and an ex boxer and martial artist so they wont physically challenge me but i love shredding racist with cruel wit and truth. i wont even let it happen in my presence without biting somebodies head off. small minded racists deserve to feel mentally small. but to the opposite i love seeing people of color like myself into goth and metal. alot of times ive felt like the only one. first got into goth in the early 80s and it wasnt till a few years ago that i found racism in gothic culture.

  • Have been dealing with a bigot and narcissist in the mother of my kids, they all rallied in a witch hunt against me cos I was defending my kids. Had kids with her when off my face. . .didn't realise she was a bigot.. Has reversed blamed me for shit to enable her persecution of my open, peaceful soul. Even experienced white autocrats using black people to play the race card to persecute my Gothic soul. Everybody needs to listen to Boyd Rice's Mr. Intolerance. Have fought the fight, kids are sort of OK now and adults. Sadly daughter has difficult relationship with mother who forces her to be lawyal but daughter loves both parents. Sadly she's drug addicted due to the emotional pain. Had same shit with my divorced parents. Keep positive as there are more decent people than not. X

  • No racism is just stupid and did not belong to goth!

  • Why does the goth comm fucking gatekeep from everyone EXCEPT bigots

  • Thanks for sharing..LOVE๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ–ค

  • I've tried and tried to find where I fit in my whole life. And everywhere I went, I did not feel welcomed. I even tried to find a group that helped with mental health and I thought I found a home and family, but they ended up hurting me more than anyone else has ever done to me. That's when I stopped trying to find where I fit in. Because everyone loves to sit there and say, "Oh, we welcome everyone and anyone. No matter where you come from, race, sexual identity, religion, or no religion, etc. But I find that those are the ones who hurt you the most. And I've gotten to the point where I'm just more introverted and I'm just over trying to fit in to society who sits there and don't practice what they preach. I've tried to fit in my whole entire life. Goth community, Alternative community, Beauty, Drug and Alcohol, Gamer, Church and etc. And I just always felt like the black sheep. Let alone my own family as well. So basically just stay to myself. Everyone is all like, "Oh, why don't you try to be more outgoing and branch out?" Well I've tried to branch out and it still didn't work. And besides, I like being introverted. I don't really have the social skills to interact with people who don't give a shit. I'm just to that point. But sorry for going off topic. I just wanted to get that out there.

  • It doesnt make sense to me at all that there are bigots within the goth community given its origins and the fact that punk/goth is and always has been about anti-establishment and embracing the marginalized . In fact i think minorities given their history of oppression and generational suffering have a BETTER understanding of the goth perspective ,style of music , fashion and lyrics [just my personal opinion] . Bigots are reductive and obscene , they should never be given the time of day or allowed to spread their hate on any platform within OUR subculture . Be inclusive , support each other , and with an open mind embrace other cultures because they all have incredible things to offer humanity as a whole โ˜บโœŒโค๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’—

  • Thank you for the great message ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ–ค more timely than ever right now ๐Ÿฆ‡๐Ÿฆ‡๐Ÿฆ‡

  • I'm Latino and my wife is Black. We met in the goth scene and still participate as often as possible. Fortunately, we have never experienced ethnic bigotry in the scene. I know it exists other places, but fortunately, not around us.

  • I only just found this, but I wanted to add this. To be quite honest I'm white and have been in and around the Goth culture since the 80s and if it wasn't racism, the elitist elements of the scene would find another reason to dislike others. I find quite a lot of Goths I've encountered mean spirited, narcissistic and misanthropic. Some of the people drawn to the scene unfortunately ruin it for everyone else and are probably drawn to the scene for the depressing music/imagery because of personality/psychological issues.

  • I LOVE YOU! I am a 65 year old who loves and lives the style of an urban vampire. Racism, bigotry and opinionated other "vamps" have been the bane of my existence! I have also been trying to help other "vamps of color" get around the beliefs that these idiots put out there, but it is an uphill struggle! Thank you for your support!

  • Hey SoulFlower,

sorry, I am late to the discussion. Thank you for your openness. ๐Ÿ™‚
My question (25f, white) is: What do you think of white Gothics wearing "fearie locks" or wool locks?
    I hesitate to get them.

  • I only see this kind of bigoted stuff online now, when I was new to the subculture occasionally I'd get people say "you can't be goth, you're too dark". Now the goth look throws off traditional bigotry because they're distracted by the look before they notice my race. Not sure how I feel about it but at least people are glaring at my choices rather than my skin tone first.
